The second half of the 19th century saw a proliferation of electro-magnetic batteries in the form of mixed-metal pendants that supposedly responded to the skin’s moisture creating a therapeutic electrical reaction. Boyd’s battery was perhaps the most commercially successful of them as indicated by the frequency with which example still turn up. The Lowder battery is a rara avis. Its benefits were purported to include: purifying the blood, invigorating the whole system, strengthening the nerves and curing all aches and pains.
