“A microscope which is essentially a Cuff instrument, but with a stage specially arranged for micrometry, was designed by the Duc de Chaulnes and is described by him in a folio volume entitled Nouvelle Methode pour diviser …, 1768. He gives very full instructions for manufacture, with drawings of every parts of the instrument in a series of six large plates … an ornate example of this microscope is in the Musée des Arts et Metiers in Paris (Clay & Court, p. 184).”
