LARGE CIRCUMFERENTOR/SIMPLE THEODOLITE SIGNED S. SAUNDERS. FECIT 14" INCHES DIAMETER, 360 DEGREE CIRCLE DIVIDED IN DEGREES, VERNIER READING TO ONE MINUTE OF ARC. FINELY ENGRAVED SILVERED COMPASS BOX WITH 360 DEGREE OUTER CIRCLE, INNER CIRCLE FOUR 90 DEGREE QUADRANTS, ORIGINAL NEEDLE, BRASS COVER FOR COMPASS. THE SIGHTING VANES ARE NOT ORIGINAL BUT I MUST SAY THE ENGINEERING IS EXTREEMLY COMPETENT & MUST HAVE BEEN VERY EXPENSIVE TO CONSTRUCT TO SUCH A HIGH STANDARD. COMPASS 5.3/4" DIAMETER. THERE WERE TWO SAMUEL SAUNDERS WORKING IN LONDON IN THE 18TH CENTURY, I BELIEVE THIS WAS MADE BY THE EARLIER INSTRUMENT MAKER WORKING 1708-1743.
