Description

EARLY GIMBALLED PLANE TABLE COMPASS mid-18th

An early Italian gimballed plane table compass mid-18th + original case

Dimension: 27cm long, compass diam. 10cm

It is made of heavy brass, it has a support arm, mounting hole, and twin gimbal rings maintaining the compass always in horizontal.

The compass itself is set in a weighted brass bowl and featured silvered plate scribed SE,OR,ME,OC. Original magnetized needle.

Condition is very fine throughout, complete with its shaped wooden case black paper-covered.

Beautiful patina.

Although the fully gimballed design suggest nautical use, it perhaps was made for surveying in mountainous terrain or mines.

It was conceived to be attached to the edge of a plane table.
