Description
Pleasing decorative design with ornate folding gnomen on a wooden plinth and four brass bun feet. Eight cardinal points (East marked O-German, David Beringer ???), blued and steel floating compass needle points North, black plinth (ebony?), original glass. Measuring 5.5 cm. square, plinth is 6.5 cm. square, hour ring with Roman numerals (morning IIII-XII and afternoon/evening XII-VIII), ornate chiselling of brasswork screwed down to the plinth on the corners, The black card (faux leather) case with three roses decorating the center. Case shows wear from use but is intact with a silk thread to extract the instrument. I have found one other example in an American (New-York Historical Society) museum/library but it is misdated 1700-1800. I believe this to be late Georgian/Victorian in age due to the triangular compass needle design.
