Description
Finest set of Georgian gold/coinage scales currently on the market. Oblong mahogany case with ornate brass hinges opens to reveal a cloth lined three compartment area for the chiselled steel and brass scales and a complete set of Georgian weights (after the edict of 1772). For the connisseur of weights and measures, these roped coin weights (from 3 and 12 down to S:D 4 and 6= 10 weights in total) are worth hundreds of Pounds alone !! Here we have a completely original set of scales including a fabulous trade label for Willm. Bullock of 7 Cannon Street, London with blindfolded Lady of Justice, bearing warning sword for penalty of death if caught forging or clipping coins ( a common Georgian problem).
The chiselled steel beam measures 12 cm. in length with ornate ends, gallows and drop. The tassel is original as is the stringing to the 5 cm. diameter brass pans. The oblong mahogany case, with secure push button closure measures 15 x 6 x 2 cm. with original brown cloth liner. The best set of scales I have seen in 40 years. No issues, no damages.
William Bullock was at the Cannon Street address for 10 years and was in business as a scale maker in london for over 30 years. References: Clifton for dates and adresses, Sheppard and Musham for construction and weights.
