Description

The best example currently on the market and by a top maker. Signed “DOLLOND, LONDON”, this lacquered brass and silver equinoctial compass sundial is in fine, unpolished (as found) condition in a flawless, black sharkskin case with green velvet liner (one hook missing). 10 cm ( 4 inch) compass with blued steel compass needle (points North) on a silvered background with cardinal points and 4 x 90 degree, quadrant divided field. Spirit levels at right angles (bubbles intact), raised sundial with folding gnomen and latitude arc for various locations up to 60 degrees N or S. Three adjustable, threaded legs for perfect leveling in a tripod formation. Wheat ear engraving and all silvering intact and unpolished. Original glass. A 250 year old time capsule !!!
