Description

A fine cast, 12 inch  square, bronze sundial with semi-circular hour ring (hand engraved and divided) with novel sayings around the perimeter in the Georgian/Victorian style. NOT an East Indian knockoff, this sundial (although spuriously dated 1602) was attributed to the original design of Elias Adam f.1627. Signed “J. Bryant, Chester Fecit, 1602”, it was not uncommon for instrument makers/jewellers/retailers to commission castings of older, pleasing sundial designs for wealthy patrons and their garden follies.

Having cardinal points for alignment and light-hearted sayings on every side (see photos), the gnomen is set for 53 degrees and measures 7 inches long. There are also 2 cast dolphins with fanciful tails on either side of the curved and end raised hour ring. Very heavy and pleasing, you can see by the rear photo that it has real age and has been cast and reinforced in 4 main parts.

Attribution in 2nd to last photo.
