Description

Hard to describe this one. Either a large Cary/Gould simple/compound brass microscope or a small Jones most improved model with some unusual features/accessories not seen in other known examples. Transition or apprentice piece?, it extremely well made, yet unsigned. Late Georgian/early Victorian in age, the condition and completeness are superb.

Standing 12 inches (30 cm.) tall on a folding tripod foot, fully inclining and rotatable, single sided mirror (minor spotting), three peg, eared stage insert with a never before seen, two light stop flap/diaphragm on a screw below. Long rack and pinion (perfect) to accommodate 5 (five) stacking objectives (all lenses intact) that can be used in simple or compound modes. The body tube is perfectly cylindrical (like French microscopes) and not conical in any way (like Cary/Gould/Jones) but the machining, accessories and case are definitely English made (as is the lock).

The accessories are complete, as you can see from the photos and include a light condensing insert that can be used above or below the stage, if the 2 stop diaphragm is moved to the side. Perfect set of six bone sliders (4 transparent/2 opaque) and an extra glass slide of the same dimensions.  Live box, hand magnifier, hand forceps, stage forceps, mica box, B/W disc, extra field lens and stage condenser. This microscope has all of the bells and whistles of the larger Jones models !!

The mahogany case is in extremely good condition with blank name plate, brass escutcheon and functional lock and key. Case measures 9 x 6 x 2 inches ( 23 x 15 x 2.5 cm) with chamfered edges and royal blue lid liner. A one off ?? Good optics. 99% original, golden lacquer.
