MUSSCHENBROEK (Pieter van), Essai de physique. Avec une description de nouvelles sortes de machines pneumatiques, et un recueil d’experiences, Leiden, Samuel Luchtmans, 1751.
2 volumes 4to of I. portrait, XXIII, (5), 8 pages of catalog, 493, (1) pages and 12 plates (numbered 1 to 11 and with a 5 bis) ; of II. (4), -882, (26) pages and 18 plates (numbered from 12 to 29 including 1 map), then 60 pages and 4 large folded plates ; contemporary calf.
Second French edition, augmented by the illustrated description of the air-pump machine.
This book is particularly interesting since it illustrates the instruments sold by the brother of Pieter van Musschenbroek, Jan, and the experiments that could be realized with ; in addition, an interesting “list [with prices] of the various machines of physics, mathematics, anatomy and surgery found at Jan van Musschenbroek in Leyden”.
This list lists dozens of instruments some of which are totally unknown today, such as a five-pointed pair of dividers, and more generally all the physical instruments of the time, including microscopes.
Very good copy, complete with 34 plates and portrait.
The last large plates superbly illustrate the monumental air-pump machine and all its accessories invented by the Musschenbroeks.
