Description
‘Universal Microscope’ by Smith Beck & Beck, circa 1862 /3, number 3186, the circular base with a diameter of 5.5 inches and a height of around 11.5 inches. The large single limb has an axis to the top allowing the rest of the instrument to turn. There is a brass plate to the stage held loosley in place by a double spring clip. There is a single sided mirror (which is quite milky) and an articulated magnifyer to the side of the stage. The large focus thumb wheel is slightly distorted but turns ok. The body tube moves down freely via the fusee chain but snags when racking up. I note that there is some play in the chain; when the thumb wheel is turned to rack upwards the wheel turns a little before the chain grips on the rack cog. On reflection, I’m sure if the chain is tightened a little this would cure it but I’m unsure how to do this.
The microscope is contained in the original case where it appears the back has been re-fixed in place with glue (old glue is visible). One wooden slat inside the case is missing along with the lock.
The microscope has one eye-piece and one objective. The lacquer is intact and the microscope is very clean.
