Description

Horizontal round brass sundial with a compass and a movable gnomon with a bird.

The top of the plate has four time scales corresponding to latitudes 43, 46, 49 and 52 degrees.

In the centre is the signature ‘Pigeon à Lyon’ with a small scroll decoration. The bird-shaped style-axis features a scroll decoration with a scale of latitudes from 40 to 60 degrees on one side. Note the very original mounting of this gnomon, which is secured by a circular arc screwed above the compass. The latter is graduated into sixteen cardinal directions with a steel pivot in the centre supporting a blued steel needle with a brass pivot.

The back of the plate is engraved with a list of 23 cities and their latitudes, a turned foot forming a support and the gnomon spring cut and engraved in the shape of a scroll. The underside of the compass is engraved with 5 cities and their latitudes.

Note: the manufacturer is Godefroy Jean César Pigeon (1728-1811), who was active from around 1760/65 until around 1800.

Dimensions: diameter 8.9 cm x height 1.5 cm (gnomon folded) and 5.5 cm (gnomon fully open).

In a later gold-embossed leather case.

Lyon made circa 1770/1780.
