Description
Two C1870 cranioclasts with ebony handles signed by Stevens, working in London. The one with spikes is Ramsbotham’s ($395.00) and the other is Lee’s ($350.00). Cranioclasts are, according to Hibbard (THE OBSTETRICIAN’S ARMAMENTARIUM,2000: 247) “essentially large-bladed craniotomy forceps of a more sophisticated and functional design”. They are gruesome instruments of destruction, used to facilitate the removal of a dead fetus by means of cranial crushing. The metal on both has some staining but no rust.
