SOLD – A leather covered taper barrelled, single draw marine presentation telescope, signed on the draw tube, ‘H. Hunt, Cork’. He worked from 1844 – 1884 at several addresses in Cork city.
The inscription on the back collar reads, ‘ Presented by John Francis Maguire, Proprietor of the Cork Examiner to Captain Gilmore as a small token of gratitude for many services rendered as Commander of the Bristol & Cork Steam Ship Company’s ‘Rose’ and especially having on two occasions, brought over by express from Bristol, Copies of the Queens speech for the Cork Examiner. Cork, Jan 21st 1847 ‘.
The telescope fully drawn measures 40.5″ ( 103 cms ) with a main lens of 2″ ( 52mm ). In good condition throughout giving a fine sharp image.
Hunter River Steam Navigation Company ordered 2 ships in 1840 – ‘Rose’ and ‘Thistle’.
The ‘Rose’ was launched on the Thames in 1840 – 275 tons.
The telescope comes with a modern wooden display stand.
