Thanks to Laurie Slater, whose site ( Phisick) educates us all, I was able to properly identify these objects. They are not miniature ear trumpets as I originally thought. Rather they are sound blockers that were widely used during WWI to protect against loud explosions that could contribute to deafness. The little hooked rod was not, as I also incorrectly thought, meant to lift the Defenders out of the case but rather to remove accumulated ear wax. Length of case: 5 cm.
