Naylor Spiralarm coal mine /underground firedamp gas detecting lamp, circa 1940s.
Spiralarm type ” M ” brass and steel version in excellent condition.
Not designed to be carried around for light, but were specifically to detect the presence of dangerous gases.
If gas was detected the flame would grow higher, causing a bimetallic coil to uncurl and form an electrical contact in the base of the lamp and light a bulb in the base of the lamp and light up red as a warning.
Height excluding the ring and hook, 12″ or 305mm, weight 3065 grams.
In very good, sound, condition apparently complete and original.
