MATHIEU (Louis), Catalogue des instruments anthropologiques, Paris, Plon, 1873

Large 8vo, 31 et (1) pages ; original printed wrappers.

Only edition, very rare, of one of the earlier and first catalogue of medical instruments entirely and only dedicated to anthropological and skull instruments.

Louis Mathieu, a Belgium-born surgical cutler, followed his formation with Charrière and Lüer, then established his personal firm in 1847 in Paris, the medical cutlery’s capital. With Charrière and Luer, he was one of the more inventiv and prolific French instrumentmakers in surgery from the 19th century.

The present catalogue is divided in three parts : anthropology, craniometry and osteometry.

It describes 92 different instruments and is illustrated by 47 woodblocks.

Stamp of Luer/Wulfing-Luer collection on the title-page and some manuscript annotation and correction in the text.

A very rare catalogue in anthropology.
