Canivet graphometer dated 1763 and signed: “ Canivet à la Sphère à Paris 1763 ” (26cm) wide with the traditional two fixed sight vanes and two on the rotating alidade, semicircular degree scale and staff mount with universal ball joint and fine butterfly thumb screw. Floral pattern decoration and with twin pierced L-shapes as compass supporters. The North point has en engraved fleur-de-lys.
Jacques Canivet (w1743-1774) was at the sign of “à la Sphere” from 1747; from 1756 he was named “Ingegneur de l’Academie des Sciences de Paris”. He provided several instruments to the Paris Astronomical Observatory.
