Title: An Historical Atlas; In a Series of Maps of the World as Known at Different Periods; Constructed upon an Uniform Scale and Coloured According to the Political Changes of Each Period: Accompanied by a Narrative of the Leading Events Exhiited in the Maps [.]
Publisher: R.B. Seeley and W. Burnside; and sold by L & G. Seeley, London
Description: 4to; pp. 186, 21 folding plates. BEAUTIFUL COPY OF QUIN’S LEGENDARY ATLAS: FROM EDEN TO EMPIRE, THE CLOUDS PART. Quin’s design, first used in this atlas, has vast inky-black clouds parting as the world is explored. The first map shows Eden, and subsequent maps show the Roman Empire, the discovery of the Americas, the Napoleonic conquests, etc. One of the masterpieces of nineteenth-century printing, and a highlight of any collection of atlases. This is the scarce second edition, quarto format, half-leather bound with marbled boards. In very good condition: elegantly re-backed, with gilt spine bands and leather corners preserved; paper label to cover; internally, title-page foxed but otherwise clean throughout, noting only some very light spotting to two or three of the maps; maps generally very good, some closely trimmed, occasional creases to the edges and minor wear at folds (but see pictures for a true indication of the condition). Further photographs available on request. Overall a very pleasing copy of this classic atlas.
