Description

A very fine and rare 18th century, brass compass/sundial with folding pin gnomen. 3 1/2 inches in diameter, paper dial divided into 16 cardinal points. Ornate, blued steel compass needle on chiselled pivot point (still points North). Roman numeral hour ring from 4 a.m. to 8 p.m., divided into 15 minute increments, wheat ear decoration, gnomen capable of measuring from 0-90 degrees and folding for travel. Brass lid has the identical paper compass rose quadrant divisions and flourishes. Threaded lid screws on cleanly and securely. No damage internally or externally noting minor oxidation of paper in the lid. Oddly, unsigned. Magnificent early workmanship/chiselling. Pocket size. c.1780.
