An exceptional, cased pair of walnut quizzing glasses. Housed in their original mahogany case with red baize liner, the pair consists of a larger, magnifying type and smaller reducing (corrective) glass. Perfect lenses, turned walnut lens frames to slender stems terminating in loops (of one piece, turned and polished construction) for insertion of ribbon around your neck. Popular among the gentry of Georgian and Victorian eras, the quizzing glass was not only useful for the viewing of museum artifacts but also for the ogling of prospective conquests. The more useful magnifying glass (2-3 X) is 2 3/4″ in diameter and 4 1/4″ overall. The myopic, reducing lens is 1 1/2″ in diameter and 3 1/4″ in overall length. Perfect, rarely used condition. The two part, slotted and lined, card type mahogany case measures 4 1/4 x 3 1/4 x 1 1/2″ with minor scratches and dents.
