Rare and fine patent model of a simple theodolite for plane table surveying by W. & T. Gilbert, London. c.1825. Signed on the green card 5″ compass, this instrument exhibits draw tube focusing of the telescope (3/4″ diameter), slide lock and push button stop for the compass and twin alidades. Wonderful condition noting one replacement screw. Clear optics with original crown (greenish) glass lenses, inverted image (10X) with cross hair. Housed in a raised, double bracket formation above the compass (divided into four 90 degree quadrants) with knurled, locking screw (presumably for rotation and/or removal). Alidades have open sighting with 1/4″ holes set at right angles to the telescope. The back of the instrument is blank (an indication of plane table use only-no mounting hole). Original lacquer (90+). William and Thomas Gilbert were a gifted team in London, from 1819-1831.
