Description
SOLD – A brass theodolite, circa 1907, known as a Light Mountain Transit, manufactured by W. & l. E. Gurley, Troughton & Simms being the agents. The large silvered dial measuring 4.75″ across and the horizontal plate 6.5″, the silvered compass marked from 0-90-0-90 etc in four quadrants, a thumb wheel allows the user to slowly rotate the outer compass on geared teeth with another thumb wheel locking the compass in place. The telescope measures 8.5″ long and adjusts to focus with a thunb screw and gives a good, clear inverted image with internal stadia lines. The vertical half circle scale reads from 0-80 in both directions. There is a bubble level below the telescope with a graduated scale. The horizontal plate holds a bubble level and cross bubble, though one is currently dry.
On a four screw adjusting / levelling base, currently fixed to a large mahogany platform. With sun visor hood and plumb bob weight, contained in original mahogany case (leather carrying strap missing).
A very clean example of this type of instrument.
