SOLD – A three draw mahogany barrelled telescope signed, ‘Watkins & Hill, Charing Cross, London’. They worked from 1819 – 1856, had various Royal Appointments and supplied the East India Company.
It measures 28″ (74 cms) extended and 9.75″ (25 cms) when closed with a main lens of 42 mm. It gives a magnification of 20 x with a fine, sharp image. It has a lens cap and dust slider to the eye-piece and is very good condition throughout.
The mahogany case has a trade label to the inside lid for ‘Thomas Dunn, Optician, Edinburgh’. Thomas took over from his brother John and betweem them they worked from 1824 – 1867. They may have been agents for Watkins or a retailer of second hand instruments.
