Description

Length : 24cm, width : 1,7cm ; thickness : 1,8cm.

These proportional dividers, made in nickel silver, have an uncommon shape, which seems unrecorded by specialised bibliographies. We did not manage to find any illustration in modern and contemporary literature.

The instrument has four arms, two of which, on the same side, are folding. The instrument seems to be used to reduce measurements of objects in three dimensions: the more one bends/curves the foldable arms, greater is the reduction.

Furthermore, the folding arms can be bent to different degrees, which could allow to use this dividers as a four-legged instrument.

This instrument is exhibited at the NY antiquarian book fair at the Park Avenue Armory from 27-30 April.
