Original Welsh Coal Miners Safety Lamp made by E. Thomas & Williams LTD Aberdare Glamorgan South Wales
Cambrian Type No 8 Gas Detector 1947.
This is the standard E.T.&W. gas detecting lamp, circa 1950s.
The lamp was powered by paraffin/oil, flint spark ignited the wick, because of the danger of gas explosion, it was locked in use underground, this could only be opened by a powerful magnet at the lamp filling / lighting station above ground.
The magnetic lock is de activated, the flint spark ignition is missing the activating lever under the base, the wick elevator is functional.
Knurled collar vents above and below the glass are jamed with dirt but would free up with a little tlc.
In good, sound, condition, dents and scratches from use, the base of the reservoir has been re soldered at some stage.
Height excluding the ring and hook, 10,1/4\” or 260mm, weight 2033 grams
