Description

A very rare example of Junod’s Boot. The French physician Victor Junod , 1809-1881, introduced his device to the Academy of Sciences in 1833. It was essentially a form of dry cupping applied to a whole limb– there was also counterpart for the arm.  Junod made quite ambitions claims for his device. The basic principle was that it would draw blood away from general circulation and in the process reduce fever and inflammation. He also argued that it could produced syncope, thus facilitating painless surgery. These marvels were achieved by fitting the boot to the leg, holding it in place by a belt  or cloth top with a drawstring–see image from Tiemann catalog–and withdrawing air with a pump.
