Description

A 7 inch terrestrial globe clock, German, circa 1905 – 1907.

The terrestrial globe, with countries and oceans indicted in French, is mounted in a half meridian, with an equinoctial colure and a solstitial colure, the equatorial horizon ring is divided into two twelve hour half days, full rotation from west to east every 24 hours, as the clock mechanism rotates the globe local time can be calculated. Turning the globe moves the clock’s hands, and turning the hands move the globe, aligning the time to the corresponding place on the globe.

The globe is mounted on a mahogany base, the clock movement is housed within.

3 ½ inch dial in Arabic numerals. The movement is 30 hour, with winding key.

The brass back plate is marked: GES. GESCHUTZT – REGISTERED – DEPOSE

Ges. Geschutzt (Gesetzlich geschützt).

Geographical place names include: Autriche Hongrie, Empire Russe, Empire Chinois, Empire Ottoman, Perse, Arabie, Etats Unis, Amerique Centrale, Bresil, and Australie.

Oceans, seas, and gulfs are named.

Ocean currents, shipping routes and railways are also indicated.

Dating of the globe:

1905 – End of the Swedish-Norwegian Union (Norway independent); Sakhalin Island divided between Japan and Russia (Asia).

1907 – Indian Territory no longer visible in Eastern Oklahoma; Italian Somaliland established. The western part of Oklahoma is shown as Okla-homa and the eastern part as Terr’re Indien (Territoire Indien, the Indian Territory), indicating a date before Oklahoma statehood in 1907.
