Description

A good and early example of the famous Julien le Roy’s large high precision sundial made by Jacques Le maire around 1735.

The dial is signed : “Inventé par Julien Le Roy de la Société des Arts / fait par Jacques Le Maire de la Société des Arts au génie à Paris”.

In 1734, Julien Le Roy, the Louis XV clockmaker, presented a memoir about a high precision dial for reset and regulate watches and clockes where he described a such kind of sundial.

The present dial is of early form, without compass and with the mention “Invented by Julien Le Roy”. Some later examples don’t have this mention and were just signed by Le maire.

A important and famous dial in the history of clockmaking.

The sundial measures 22x17cm for the plate and around 12cm height.
