Jules Richard patented the first reliable self-registering barometer in 1880 (baromètre enregistreur), capable of continuously recording atmospheric pressure: an inked pen periodically traced the pressure values onto a rotating cylinder. The instrument was an enormous success, and the firm at 25 Rue Mélingue began to grow rapidly.
