Description

Large and early magnifier, or simple microscope, known as the Coddington microscope, after its invention by Henry Coddington in 1829. The instrument is unsigned, as usual.

The Coddington simple microscope consists of a single doubly convex lens, the smaller diameter of which works as a diaphragm.

Note the quality of the turning of the handle on this large and early model, which is certainly datable to the 1830s or 1840s.

The lens is 3 cm thick and 3.8 cm in diameter; the instrument is 13.1 cm long.
