Description
A marvelous 1914 US patent, number 1,106,626, for a Rube Goldberg-like umbrella “flying machine” that was issued to Hippolyte Marius Chiron on August 11, 1914. Despite the Wright Brothers having successfully flown in 1903 there were still inventors out there trying to come up with flying machines that were improvements on the Wright aircraft. This one likely never got off the ground but what a great looking contraption! Chiron was an inventor who did not limit his creations to efforts at flight. In fact he is best known for devices for reed instruments but he also invented a device for washing windows on tall buildings and a “safety boat. This appears to be Chiron’s own copy, as it has his NYC address and his initials (“H.C.”) handwritten on it–see last image.
