A schematic ray diagram of a terrestrial telescope shows how light travels through the system so that the final image is magnified and upright. The set have:

• Objective lens (convex lens)
  • Collects light from a distant object
  • Forms a real, inverted intermediate image
• Erecting system (lenses or prisms)
  • Turns the image upright again
  • Often consists of multiple lenses or prisms
• Eyepiece (magnifying lens)
  • Magnifies the image for the observer

In the Corner is the monogram of the firm “A. Pichler Witwe und Sohn Wien”. The company was founded in 1793 by Anton Andreas Pichler in Vienna. Following the founder’s death in 1823, his widow, Elisabeth Pichler, continued the business. From 1851/1852, the company was renamed A. Pichlers Witwe & Sohn (A. Pichler’s widow & son), after her son Franz Pichler had joined the management. In 1922, the publishing house was absorbed into the larger Hölder-Pichler-Tempsky group, which still exists today as a major educational publisher in Austria.
