Description
A fine painting attributate to the Danish painter Christian-august Lorentzen showing a Flemish scientist in Antwerpen and dated from 1779.
The old scientist is represented with three books, a magnifier and a Cuff microscope finely painted in a realistic manner. The microscope seems to be a English model from the middle of the 18th century, by Adams or another famous English maker from the time.
At the backside an early 19th century manuscript note indicates : “Le portrait ci contre a été peint en 1779 à Anvers par Christian a. Lorentzen peintre danois de grande réputation comme peintre de [?]” [The portrait shown here was painted in 1779 in Antwerp by Christian A. Lorentzen, a Danish painter of great renown as a painter of [?]]
After leaving Copenhagen for Paris, where he practiced his art as a portrait painter from 1780 for about five years, Lorentzen stopped in Antwerp, where he painted this portrait.
The painting is in oval-shape measuring with its frame 82x71cm.
The condition is generally good.
A nice and early painting of a microscope.
