Five 18th and 19th American and English surgical saws. Numbers in lower-left of images correspond to numbers that follow:
1. 18th-Century Bell-type metacarpal-bow saw with octagonal wooden handle. Length: 10″ or 25cm. The metal has been cleaned. $150.00. SOLD
2. Short C1840 tenon saw by Aitken, working in York. 11″ or 27.5cm. $150.00. SOLD
3. Dr. Butcher’s Bow Saw. First introduced in 1851 by Dr. Richard G.H. Butcher (1816-1891), a renowned Dublin surgeon. What makes the Butcher’s saw distinctive is that the blade can be rotated to cut at any angle. It was used by Union and Confederate surgeons during the American Civil War. This example, by Shepard & Dudley of NY, dates from the 1870s–it is identical, however, to those in use during the 1850s and 60s. Metal has darkened a bit but overall in nice original condition with checkered ebony handles.12.5″ or 31.25cm. SOLD
4. A c1840 amputation saw with folding ebony handle by Coxeter of London. A rare form. Very good overall condition noting small crack in ebony scale on one side of the handle –see photos. $350.00. SOLD
