An American automatic Cashier Check Perforator, from the late 1800’s, most likely manufactured by Abbott Machine Company in Chicago, Illinois.

This was used by banks to ensure the dollar amounts on the checks and other official financial documents could not be altered. The machine would use tiny perforations to punch each number into the document, making it much more difficult to increase dollar amounts on paychecks, wire transfer, etc.

The “automatic” type advances the check automatically when a lever is pressed or a handle is turned.

Heavy cast iron body, lovely design with gold decoration, a great example of early office equipment.
