Description
A rare electrotype medal issued by the Richmond Hospital School of Anatomy, Medecine and Surgery, with a bust of Richard Carmichael. Marked for the electrotypist W. A. Fagan.
Richard Carmichael (1779-1849) was a distinguished surgeon, who founded the school in 1816 on the outskirts of Dublin. In 1847 he performed the first operation in Ireland under general anaesthesia. After his death in 1849 the hospital was renamed the Carmichael Hospital in his honour.
