Description

A rare very large example of an octogonal string gnomon sundial splendidely signed “Butterfield à Paris” and for only one latitude : “Pour 48 degrés et 51 minutes”, so for Paris.

The dial is very unusual for several reasons :

-Its impressive size : the plate measures 24×25,5cm or 9,5×10 inches and the gnomon 20cm height.

-Its forme : the octogonal plate is quite unusual for the French string gnomon sundial, normally the shape of the large models are squarre.

-The quality of the engraving and the decoration : the large signature are some delicated decoration and just above the compass, the decoration is deeply chiseled.

The sundial preserves its original compass.

The gnomon lost is string and its plomb bob.

A very unusual and spectacular French sundial from the late 17th century.
