Description
An antique dental amalgam carrier dating from the late 19th century, characterised by its elaborate knurled handle design and precision construction typical of the era when amalgam fillings became the standard dental restoration material. At this time amalgam carriers were essential tools in every dental practice. This instrument was used to pick up, transport, and precisely place amalgam (mercury-silver alloy) filling material into prepared tooth cavities. The robust construction was designed for daily professional use and repeated sterilisation. This example was made by Claudius Ash & Sons, the makers mark being stamped on the top.
Claudius Ash & Sons was a pioneering British company that revolutionised denture and dental equipment manufacturing after Claudius Ash, a goldsmith, began producing porcelain teeth in the 1820s. The firm became a successful international enterprise, specialising in “mineral teeth” and a complete range of dental supplies.
Items such as this are rare as they were made in very small numbers to the highest quality standards as price was not the primary concern, most good examples are now in museums and private collections.
