Description
Two antique dental tools dating from 1870, a mirror and matching probe, the probe is marked ‘Ash Eng’ for Claudius Ash & Sons, the reverse of the mirror is marked ‘5 Boilable’ indicating that these would have been made at a time when the importance of sterilisation was beginning to be recognised. The catalogue page has been taken from the Claudius Ash catalogue for 1871, the distinctive handle style can be clearly seen. The two items measures 14 and 15.5cm in length respectively, some light scratches to the mirror, otherwise both in good order.
Claudius Ash & Sons was a prominent 19th and early 20th-century British manufacturer of dental appliances and materials, founded by Claudius Ash in the 1820s after inheriting a silversmithing business. The company, known for its high-quality porcelain dentures, expanded into an international market and dominated the European dental supply industry by the mid-19th century.
