Description

An antique rectal or vaginal speculum dating from the 19th century. The obturator slides into the speculum, it has a plate on the topside which is the depth of the thickness of the speculum wall thus when it slides into the speculum it provides an even and smooth surface for reducing discomfort during insertion; once in place the obturator was retracted using the metal ring allowing, with the help of a light source, examination of the rectum or vagina being investigated. The catalogue illustration is a similar item but without the obturator and dating from the late 19th century, although similar items had been used throughout the 19th century so this example may be earlier. The speculum with the obturator fitted measures 12.5cm (4.92″) in length and the diameter of the protective plate is 5cm (2″).
