Description

Antique surgical hand brace, trephine drill, by Allen & Hanburys and dating from the early 20th century. This precision manual surgical drill brace would have been used in operations for neurosurgery or orthopaedic surgery when hand-powered drilling was necessary before the availability of electric drills, paired with surgical bits, burrs or trephines to bore into bone, such as the skull.

The brace is composed of high-quality chrome-plated metal, with a rotating spherical handle for grip and control, and a knurled chuck mechanism for holding interchangeable surgical burrs or bits and with a bit fitted which can be lifted out once the retaining cylinder has been unscrewed. The tool remains in excellent mechanical condition, with smooth rotating action and original finish intact with minor marks. The brace is clearly marked “Allen & Hanburys London”.

Allen & Hanburys was founded in 1715 in Lombard Street, London, by Silvanus Bevan, a Welshman, apothecary and a Quaker. Bevan and his brother, Timothy, who became his partner and later succeeded him, were known for their just dealings and the integrity and quality of their drugs. The company grew into a respected pharmaceutical centre and had established a strong reputation with American doctors by the late 18th century. They later moved into the manufacture of surgical instruments opening branches in many countries overseas.

The brace measures 27.5 x 15cm (11″ x 6″) and is heavy at 1.25kg (2.76lbs).
