“Invented in 1906 by Henry Armaignac, this autosynoptometer is undoubtedly the most sophisticated of all medical stereoscopes based on binocular vision. It allows to interrogate and reveal the functioning of human binocular vision and stereoscopy. This ophthalmological device was used to detect simulated eye diseases and to measure visual acuity. The present model signed and sold by Giroux, one of the most important French instrument makers for the development of early stereoscopic and daguerreotypical devices. Very early (if not the first) stereoscope used in orthoptic training built by Alphonse Giroux in Paris, with the engraving on the top ‘Autosynotométre du Dr. Armaniac’. “
