Description

An anatomical flower model by Brendel of the Conium or Hemlock, n0 60, c  1890-1900. This model was described in the Brendel catalogue as: Conium Maculatum Schierling, Flower and fruit, magnified 24 times (Blüte and Frucht, Vergr.24 fach)

In 1866 Robert Brendel (ca. 1821-1898) began in business in Breslau in 1866, making lovely and accurate models of enlarged flowers, and winning medals at major exhibitions: Moscow (1872), Cologne (1890), and Chicago (1893). Following Brendel’s death in 1898, his son Reinhold moved the firm to a suburb of Berlin and won several more exhibition medals. In 1866, there were thirty models to choose from, and by 1913, there were nearly 300. The models were developed in consultation with professors including Julius Cohn, Eduard Eidam, Alexander Tschirch, Leopold Kny, Carl Müller, Emerich Ratháy, Lajos Jurányi, and G. Höstermann. They are made of various materials, such as papier-mâché, wood, metal wire and glass.
