Of unusual form, the actual compass / sundial instrument is fixed into the mahogany ebonized case. The three adjustable levelling screws protrude through the bottom of the case allowing the user to level the sundial, as normal, but within its case. The blackened brass ring is fixed to the case and incorporates two bubble levels at 90 degree intervals. The silvered chapter ring signed, ‘Charles, Nephew & Co., Calcutta’, in mint condition as is latitude bar and dial. The chapter ring holds a folding gnonom bar and the compass needle can be locked in place via a pin. The inner case lid holds an almanac chart and two hooks and eyes hold the lid firmly ( case 4″ x 4″ ). Excellent condition throughout.
