Description

Exceptional architect’s set in embossed leather case, complete with its three brass instruments, all signed “ST” (signature not identified to date).

The leather case, with a sliding opening, contains: three brass and steel instruments: a folding square acting as a scale-ruler with arms of different lengths and fretworked ends, a folding king’s foot and a pair of dividers with a “ball head”.

This set is the only known complete architect’s set bearing the signature “ST”.

We can confirm that this kit is of German origin thanks to the foot rule scale graduated in Rhenish inches (Rheinische Zoll, old unit of measurement), as well as by the typology and characteristic form of the case.

References: There is only one other instrument bearing the signature “ST”. It is a folding square, also in brass and very similar to the present example. It is dated 1672 and dedicated “A van Eysden” and is preserved in the Mathematisch-Physikalischer Salon, Dresden (inv. BI 233). This instrument is described under number 55 in Zeicheninstrumente, a catalogue published by the Dresden Museum.

Dimensions: Case: 16,7 cm x 3,7 cm x 1,7 cm; Square: 14,9 cm x 2,8 cm x 0,22 cm; King’s foot: 16,1 cm x 1,5 cm x 0,3 cm; Pair of dividers: 10,7 x 1,2 cm.

Germany made in 1697.
