EXQUISITE “HALF THE KING’S FOOT” RULE, French, mid-18th century, signed “Duhamel à Paris.” This folding brass rule opens to 6-7/16″ (16 cm), and is divided on one side with a “Demy Pied De Roy” scale of six early French inches (“pouces”), the terminal inches divided into twelfths of an inch (“Lignes”). Both sides bear the most elegant symmetrical patterns of hand engraving. A lovely rule, in very fine condition, by Jean-Jacques Duhamel father or son.

David and Yola Coffeen both have enjoyed academic careers, as planetary astronomer and as linguist/educator. But since 1982 (yes, 1982!) they have been full-time dealers in early scientific and medical instruments, under the name Tesseract. Selling primarily by catalogue (over 100 issued so far) they also have a web presence at www.etesseract.com, and can be contacted at email@example.com.
