Description

Standing 14 inches tall (racked down), this microscope is a rare survivor. Constructed from black enamelled cast iron and bright brass, it is a marvel of engineering. Interchangeable head stock and Frauenhofer micrometer, it was the finest Swiss measuring device of it’s day. Folding tripod base with a spread of 9 inches (adjustable for height), the microscope can be used in the vertical configuration or after detaching the stage and the mirror, in a horizontal plane. The stage and the micrometer can be interchanged as well. The instrument is supplied with one eyepiece, one objective and a substage light reducing stop. It will be posted in parts (simple re-assembly). Good optics, 99% original orange lacquer and black enamel paint. Wonderful fully rotating Frauenhofer micrometer. Single sided mirror.

It was likely designed and produced by two Swiss scientists, Marc Thury and Auguste DeLaRive who founded the firm of Societe Genevoise pour la Construction d’instruments de Physique, Geneve, commencing in 1862. Instrument dates to c.1900. No box. Nice display instrument for those collectors of microscopy and manufacturing/measuring antiques.
