Description

A good brass transit telescope on stand, signed, ‘Schmalcalder, 82 Strand, London’, standing 18.5″ high with a telescope length of 24″, the elbow eye-piece gives a good inverted image. The 6 inch circle is divided into four quadrants engraved from 0 – 90 with two verniers. There are various clamps and fine thumb wheel adjusters. The base is of an unusual shape and design having two levelling screws at the widest part and a geared thumb-wheel fine adjuster to the narrow end. With 12.5″ stride level to the top.

The instrument has been cleaned but not highly polished and still bears some ingrained marks in places but I was reluctant to polish them out with a buffer.

Charles Schmalcalder worked at 82 Strand from 1810 – 1826.
