Description
“Descriptio novi microscopii”, pages 371-372 and 1 plate in Acta Eruditorum Anno MDCLXXXVI, Leipzig, Grossium & Gletitschium, 1686 (small 4to, (4), 630, (12) pages and 15 plate, plate nine with important lack) ; contemporary green vellum with the coat of arms of Bonner de la Mosson
The first illustrated description of a Campani microscope and the first illustration of the uses of the microscope in medicine.
The present engraving is certainly one of the most famous in the early history of microscopy : it represents three different views and uses of a microscope invented and manufactured by the famous Italian optical maker Giuseppe Campani.
The illustration numbered 1 show the microscope itself, the illustration numbered 2 show a microscopist using the microscope with transparent object through the sunlight, finally the illustration numbered 3 show a microscopist using the Campani microsocpy looking to scar.
The present example was owned by the very famous collector Jospeh Bonnier de la Mosson, who was very famous during the first half of 18th century for its cabinet of curiosities and its collection of scientific instruments.
Despite some waterstain and one lack at the plate 9, the engraving showing the Campani microscope is in great condition and the provenance is of great interest and rarity.
